You might build a rockery as a feature in itself, or more commonly as part of a water feature. The stones can provide a path for the water to flow down, and create a backdrop for plants or more artificial features. Alternatively, they can provide definition to flower beds or just create barriers between areas, adding clarity to the overall landscape.
Similarly, rockeries are an excellent way of smoothing over hills, slopes and inclines; creating features out of what could otherwise end up as aesthetically wasted space, and offering an opportunity to build platforms on which to place plant pots or other accents.
You may not have the rolling hills of Gloucestershire, but you can give your garden a flavour of medieval England with this Cotswold Rockery.
